Access Forum

When Helensburgh was part of Dumbarton District Council, HGBG had a close working relationship with Council officials and with the Helensburgh Community Council and the Upland Way was the first new path which evolved from this close cooperation

Once in Argyll and Bute, it became clear that greater local action was needed and HGBG took the initiative in the creation of the Helensburgh and District Access Forum. The HGBG invited the Council, the Community Council and the Lower Clyde Project to a meeting and it was agreed that an Access Forum should include a much wider range of interests than just HGBG.

The resulting Forum consists of representatives of 14 local groups, including Argyll & Bute Council, the Scottish Landowners' Federation, the Farmers' Union, three Community Councils and other interested organisations, eg. Natural History Society, Tourist Association, British Horse Society, and Friends of Loch Lomond.

HGBG remains part of it, but feels that broader coverage is an improvement. All three of the Access Forum Chairmen to date have been HGBG committee members.

In 2005 the Helensburgh and District Access Forum compiled and published a very useful and detailed guide to footpaths and walks in and around Helensburgh and into nearby Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park . It can be purchased from the local tourist information office and other outlets in Helensburgh.
